But I have promises to keep—and miles to go before I sleep.
I couldn't stop thinking about VAL listening to Shrue's radio speech when she confronts Carson, and wondering just how many times she listened back to that recording while waiting for him. Did it bring her some comfort, to listen to someone else's last words as she waited to speak her own? Did she feel a little less alone, keeping company with another ghost that hasn't realised it's already dead?

Just because I've seen a few people make the (fair!) assumption that the Gramercy Riffs are from the Bronx, I would like to make a public service announcement for anyone unfamiliar with NYC geography that the Gramercy neighborhood is actually in Manhattan. Gramercy park is actually only a few blocks from Union Square.
Now, this does conflict with Manhattan saying Cyrus's crew "rivals with the finest from the 212", because like Gramercy IS in the 212. I do not have a good explanation for why he says that. However, I can't imagine where the Gramercy Riffs would be from if not. You know. Gramercy.

Times Square (1980)
A gentrifying New York City (in particular, the titular Times Square) gets its punk swan song in this coming-of-age cult classic—a sensory delight—about two girls who run away from home and find solace in one another, thumbing their nose at nimby, pearl-clutching adults.
Director: Allan Moyle
Cinematographer: Jacob Brackman
Starring: Tim Curry, Robin Johnson, and Trini Alvarado

Saints, i’ve had an unhealthy obsession with the way someone holds a coffee cup and stirs their coffee before, and I just feel like Regulus would be obsessed with the way James is gesturing wildly, nearly spilling hot coffee (fresh from their 700$ espresso machine) all over the cashmere turtleneck Regulus gifted him for his birthday, a hand precariously gripping over the top of the mug. not that i’m projecting…I just think Regulus is obsessed with James’ hands. I know this is a rk blog first and foremost but ‘Can’t have a leg obsession’ anon got me thinking…
it is only natural because james's hands are so distinctive!! i agree that he is always picking mugs up by spanning his hand over the top, lit cigarette still in-between his fingers, probably holding a stack of envelopes between his teeth too... really boyish physicality. always hassled & EXUBERANT & moving about in a great flurry, chattering on about some Grand Idea He Had, sidestepping obstacles with his long legs without looking. i picture him as having an almost Anthony Perkins -esque physicality to him (examples linked)..
i have an unhealthy obsession with James potter's wrists personally... i think they're knobbly and a little disproportionately long and he wears his father's old expensive leather watch just a BIT too loose on purpose.

we need more live albums. and i don’t just mean live recordings of individual songs i mean the experience
the audience singing along
transitions so good that if you close your eyes you can’t tell where one song ends and the next begins because it’s so smooth it’s like you’re there
the conversations you get at gigs that just improve the vibes every time

Mitski Thrills Town Hall with Acoustic Take on New Album
Tumblr media
Mitski – Town Hall – September 26, 2023
After some speculation that last year’s Laurel Hell might be Mitski’s final studio album, she delighted fans with the release of The Land Is Hospitable and So Are We earlier this month. She clarified to NPR, “I never intended to leave music … I decided to leave the industry for however long it would take for me to get my heart and soul back. But eventually, I kind of looked around and realized just how lucky I was to get to create the music I want to make and have my music reach other people.” To stamp her renewed outlook, the singer-songwriter embarked on the Amateur Mistake Intimate Shows, a four-city North American tour. The shift from the raucous production of Laurel Hell to the considerably quieter and meditative The Land Is lends to the more personal presentation of her work compared to her previous visit to Radio City Music Hall. As with the first show in Mexico City, Mitski played an acoustic set of her latest songs at a sold-out Town Hall on Tuesday night.

Running down the recent record in track order, Mitski began with its opening single, “Bug Like an Angel,” standing front and center at the mic bookended by a guitarist and a cellist. She provided a hearty hello to crowd and shared her history in the city with a story about writing “Class of 2013.” It was the year she graduated college, as well as the turning point when she decided to continue the dream of being a musician. A decade later she thanked New Yorkers for dreaming with her. The audience was rapt in the reverie of every quiver of her vocal delivery, while Mitski slowly incorporated gestures to emphasize her lyrics, from outstretched arms for “I Don’t Like My Mind” to a raised arm cue upon the lyrics “clap for me in the dark” on “When Memories Snow.”

Performing “My Love Mine All Mine” to the rafters felt like an opera singer unraveling. However, delivering the final track, “I Love Me After You,” bent over and then culminating in a lounging position brought the hall to a standing ovation. As a reward of appreciation, Mitski continued with a couple more songs from her back catalog welcoming folks to sing along. One ardent fan scream from the balcony upon the first few chords of “Francis Forever” and everyone else in the room commenced singing. After the trio of older favorites “I Bet on Losing Dogs,” the infectious “Love Me More” and the melancholic “A Pearl,” Mitski returned solo with an acoustic guitar to encore with “A Burning Hill” and a cover of Peter La Farge’s “Coyote, My Little Brother.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
